Fresh Produce Distributor – Sustainability Plan

We created an environmental sustainability plan and implemented a monitoring and reporting tool

Situation

Our client is a privately owned fresh produce distributor supplying major retailers and independent grocers. They were seeing growing interest and concern about environmental impact and sustainability from a range of stakeholders including customers, employees and second generation owners. However, the business did not have the capabilities within the business to understand their risks and impacts or to develop a plan to drive change.

Our Approach

Working closely with the leadership team, we used a structured process to develop a sustainability plan. The key steps were:

  • Baseline Current Impact – we calculated baseline carbon emissions using the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting requirements and evaluated impact on water and biodiversity.

  • Identify Risks – we worked with the team to identify climate change and sustainability risks to the business.

  • Formulate a Strategy – conducted a materiality assessment and helped determine the sustainability objectives and goals for the business.

  • Develop an Action Plan – we developed a detailed action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate key risks to the business and supported the creation of business cases for investment in reducing environmental impact across the supply chain.

  • Implementation and Monitoring – using our custom sustainability management platform

Results

Our client was able to quickly understand their sustainability obligations and risks and to develop a plan to significantly reduce their impact on the environment.  We were also able to educate a broad section of the business on sustainability management and to integrate sustainability into the management team’s strategic planning processes.
